Crown of Queen Liliuokalani
Design originally made by Mrs. Josephine Hanakahi on commission from the State of Hawaii Foundation of Culture and the Arts. The original quilt hangs in the hallway of the Queen Liliuokalani building in downtown Honolulu, Oahu. The artist selected the design and color (lavender on purple) because the purple crown flower was the favorite of Queen Liliuokalani (1838-1917), the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Islands.

Each of our quilts has almost a million stitches in them and more than 1,000 hours of craftsmanship.

Hawaiian quilting patterns traditionally reflected objects of nature or even everyday household objects which evoke the memory of loved ones. Objects such as plumeria blossoms, hair combs worn by Princess Kalulane, or a ginger lei. In general Hawaiian quilt patterns do not use humans or animals.
