Noble Beginings (Ti Leaf Kahilis and Maile Ti)
Believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. It is an emblem of divine power. The goddess Hina decorated herself with Ti leaves. The Ti plant, when broken off at the stem, makes an excellent natural fly whisk or fan. From this simple design, attractive feathers replaced the green leaves of the Ti plant, and polished handles were carved from wood, ivory, turtle shells to replace the stem of the plant. Used initially by servants to fan chiefs, the simple Ti leaf evolved into elaborate works of art called Kahili, which as symbols of status and power.
