Hibiscus

Native to Hawaii. This beautiful white hibiscus with red stamen flower was mainly found on Oahu and with smaller leaves on Kauai. When the first western ships arrived in Hawaii they saw young Hawaiian maidens with lovely brown skin and the white hibiscus beautifully worn behind their ear. Hawaiian tradition says if your flower is placed on the left side, you’re taken, and if you place it on the right you’re available, and if you tucked it on the back of the head, “follow me, no questions asked. Unlike many hibiscuses, Koki’o Ke’oke’o has an exquisite, delicate fragrance, and lasts for two days rather than one. There is also a native yellow hibiscus (Brackenridge) known as ma’o-hau-hele, which is Hawaii’s state flower. The red native hibiscus (Kokio) is known as koki’o-‘ula’ula, and a pink native hibiscus (Youngianus), known as hau-hele.
