Quilt, Kukui Lanikaula
This quilt depicts a legendary grove of Kukui trees on northeastern Molokai, named in honor of the kahuna (priest) Lanikaula. About 1650, the king of Maui, determined to invade the Big Island of Hawaii. Lanikaula was the only kahuna brave enough to counsel against the foolhardy undertaking. And, in fact, the Maui army was defeated and the king killed in the attempt. Upon his death, some years later, Lanikaula was buried in a great grove of Kukui trees which was named in his honor.
